“There but for the grace of God go I.”
At times this has taken on an almost sanctimonious air of position when in reality and origin it was very much the opposite. “There but for the grace of God goes John Bradford” was spoken by Bradford from his prison cell as he watched another man being led to execution. FROM A CELL!
Working with prison ministries has offered me a new perspective; that but for the unmerited grace of God, one human error, one angry moment could have charted my path on such a direction as well.
But at the same time it likewise does not mean that these behind the walls are beyond grace. It is never too late for grace or salvation. I have heard remarks from my brothers behind the razor wire and bars such as thanking Jesus for making them the most truly free they have been in years. Also, that while they may have to be in prison, praise Jesus, prison doesn’t have to be in them.
There are debts to society to be paid, but at the same time may we recall the one who paid the “sin debt” for all, the act of which was founded in the grace that John Bradford TRULY recognized. Grace is not a merited position or stance, but rather one of unhindered recognition of what truly matters.
