The congregation was pleased with Pastor Wate Awhil’s sermon on patience.
After the service, the chairman of the deacon board approached the pastor and said, “Pastor Wate, that was the best sermon I have ever heard you preach!”
“Well, thank you Deacon Chairman Letzsee Itnow,” said Pastor Wate. “I just preached the subject that I believed the Lord wanted me to share with the people.”
The following Sunday, Pastor Wate once again preached on the topic of patience. As he had the previous Sunday, Deacon Chairman Letzsee Itnow approached the pastor and complimented him for a well-delivered sermon.
“Thanks, Deacon Chairman, I just preached on the topic that I believed that the Lord had impressed upon my heart.”
For 50 more weeks, Pastor Wate Awhil preached on the topic of patience. The deacon chairman complimented the pastor after each sermon, but each week the comments became a bit less favorable.
Finally, Deacon Chairman Letzsee Itnow was at the end of his patience from listening to Pastor Wate’s sermons on patience. The Deacon Chairman called a special meeting of the full Board of Deacons to address the situation.
“Pastor Wate, we love you very much,” said Deacon Chairman Letzsee Itnow. “But you have been preaching for a solid year on patience. Some people would like to hear what you have to say about other subjects.”
“What subjects would they like for me to preach on?”
“They want to hear you talk about God’s love, grace and mercy. They want to hear biographical sermons about some of the great Bible heroes like Enoch, Elijah, Elisha, Moses, Joshua, King David, and heroines like Esther, Ruth, and Mary the Mother of Jesus. They want to learn about forgiveness.”
“So what about it, Pastor Wate?,” asked Deacon Howie Muchlonger. When will you preach a sermon on another topic?”
“How do you feel you’re personally doing with patience?,” asked the pastor.
“Your sermons are really helping me, Pastor,” said Deacon Howie. “I’m not having nearly the problem with patience that I used to.”
“That‘s great,” Pastor Wate said. “Let’s have another meeting in about three months, and if you are still doing as well then as you say you are doing now, I will leave open the possibility of preaching on another topic.”
“How long will you preach on that topic?,” asked Deacon Chairman Letzsee Itnow.
“Possibly at least a year,” replied the pastor.
“Oh no!,” exclaimed Deacon Howie. “Maybe I’m not getting along as well with my patience as I thought I was!”
