In the book Sister Chicks, you would expect to get some fluffy inane girl talk. Instead, you get a serious talking to. Robin Jones Gunn manages to address real soul issues. In this particular situation, one character is non-stoppable and forward in every aspect of her life. The other character is reserved and holds back in many circumstances.
The restrained friend tells her bold friend that she 'can't'. In this case, it's write a book. The fearless friend tells her cautious pal to listen up: "you are more gifted and capable than your wildest dreams. You have not yet begun to explore all the ways you can make your life count for the eternal kingdom. Strength and dignity are your clothing. It's time for you to drop your bucket deep into the well of possibilities that you've been ignoring all these years. Drop it way down and see what you pull up."
I don't know about you, but I could use a friend like that!
Jesus is a friend like that, if we just listen! In II Corinthians 9:8 we're shown, "God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you may have an abundance for every good work." NKJ I don't always credit translations, but I liked this one that I found in a contemporary English version; "God can bless you with everything you need, and you will always have more than enough to do all kinds of good things for others." In the original King James it says "…that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work"
This verse and the fiction story spoke to me, reminding me that I don't need to wait for the perfect writing opportunity to do some good somewhere. I don't even have to wait for a writing opportunity. As writers, we become so focused on that task alone, we may forget there are many other tools in the box that God gives us.
Is there a task in my church or an outreach in my community I'm avoiding because I feel writing is my only ability or talent? Is there a person I can give a hand to, or a gift I can use for only today, or this month?
God equips me to do more- some things may be short term, or for a single moment only. He supplies all the equipment! We need to dig into ourselves and into that tool chest and find what is already there - and use what is waiting to be used.
