And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. Luke 3:22
And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21
Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. Matthew 13:43
I suppose, one's perfume lingers in a room after she has gone. Sometimes I find myself brooding for my beloved wife. The chair in which she had rested, each thing she had touched, the room itself - calls her name to my mind. At times my heart leaps within my breast at each familiar thing about her which we had touched and shared together. How long, I ask, must my mind be tormented by tender memories? At times it makes solitude almost unbearable. When will Abba Father call me home and relief come? No, she is not "really" present no she is not "really" standing among the shadows in our home. But we are really both here. Love and memory and knowledge and yearning make it so very real!...Sometimes I lay in our bed and in the midnite hour I feel her move close to me and lay her head on my chest and tell me how much she loves me. I remember when our children reached those teenage years doing something they shouldn't be doing she would lay her head on my breast and quietly weep and pray for them. I don't drive much anymore, but the other day I drove to the place I met her more than half a century ago. The owner of the little taco stand (the original owners daughter) saw me sitting in the car, and came out to talk with me, the first thing she said was, "Poppa she is not here." I beg to differ with her. She is as much with me as the Holy Spirit is with me!
A "spirit" must first be in one's heart and mind before it becomes any kind of experience. I am able to come to this experience because I loved and knew something about her of whom I write. At times it seems as though my heart shall surely burst crying out to feel her touch, to hear her laughter, to hear her singing and playing the piano or guitar. She played classical Spanish guitar better than most pro's. My favorite song of all songs is called La Paloma, it is a love song of a man having to go away from his love for a time. He sings to her and says "If you see a dove on your window sill, don't send it away, because it is me my love." La Paloma translated to English means, "The Dove." Paloma is what I called my wife all the years we were together. My favorite artist to sing that song is a lady named Shin Yona, if you want to know what my wife sounded like, listen to it. When I used to get stressed she would start singing it to me with a little girly smile that always caused the cares of life to sail away into the sunset. She spoke Spanish, Cherokee, French, and English, fluently, sometimes she would sing it in all four, but my favorite is Spanish. O'dear friend she had a smile that would melt steel. What I wouldn't give to hear her once again softly call my name, "Poppa, you need to wash up Love, it's supper time and I have set the table, come and let us dine together." Others, who did not know her can sit in these rooms and experience nothing. I can still feel her Spirit!
Poppa only told you all that, to say, "La Paloma" Holy Spirit came to me in a dream the other night, 'no not a bean dream', I saw La Paloma of God the Father. I felt His presence, and I spoke with Him. No, Poppa not hearing strange voices and have no claims of being a prophet. Lord only knows we got plenty of those around these days. It was simply a dream in the Spirit.
Following the Resurrection, the disciples experienced the same presence of Jesus' Spirit. They were able to experience it because they remembered, knew, loved, and yearned for Him...Christ was in their minds and hearts...I do not claim to understand the workings and initiatives of the Holy Spirit. "That which is born of the Spirit is spirit. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit."....Only a fool would say, "I know exactly what the Holy Spirit is going to do." But I do know that the Spirit tends to be "really" present when accompanied by love, knowledge, memory, and yearning for Christ.
Luke's version of Jesus' baptism is one of those times there was no fire, wind, thunder, or lightning. The Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form as a Dove, and a voice came from heaven, "Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased." The Holy Spirit is not a bird. Luke and the other apostles use the Dove as a metaphor for the Spirit's coming into our lives. It is a beautiful metaphor. Have you ever seen a Dove descend and land? It is graceful, gentle, and quiet. That is the way the Holy Spirit will sometimes flood into our lives. Maybe in the midnight hour in your sleep, maybe when we are in our quite time in prayer. The Holy Spirit came to Jesus gently, quietly. "Now when all the people were baptized, 'and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying', the Holy Spirit descended upon him."
God likes to bestow gifts on his children. In the second chapter of Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, we are told that we can't even imagine all the good things God has in mind for those who love him. The Holy Spirit has a special role in this wonderful process. Let me remind you....Holy Spirit is God in the present tense.
In verse 12 of that second chapter we are told that it is only through the Holy Spirit that we can understand God's gifts. Most of the Holy Spirit's gifts to us fall into four categories: power, truth, comfort, and warning. For some reason, Some Christians are afraid of the Holy Spirit. They fear that if they release Him, they might become emotionally unbalanced and do bizarre things they have seen on TV religion. They think the Holy Spirit ought to stay over in the Pentecostal churches and leave us sophisticated Christians alone. But remember, the Holy Spirit makes people more stable rather than less. While the Holy Spirit may make us exuberant and enthusiastic, we are never made weird or unbalanced. One of the fruits of the Spirit is self-control.....continued
