John Running Wolf told me a story, when I was just a lad, about some of the things that happened when Creator designed Mother Earth and made a place that Cherokees would be happy and could live in love and peace. He said, "Creator made all things, animals, birds, mountains, seas, and humans. But when He finished His work, there was only silence, there was no sound anywhere on Earth.
He said, "Creator had some helpers that we call angels, His Son Jesus and Great Spirit was there, and they were looking at the new creation and mentioned to Creator, “to be complete, it needed the sound of Creator's praise". John said, "Creator thought about what they said and decided they were right. He also told me, “Creator is there for you and He will listen to you when you have things you need to talk about.", John said, "Never forget that Creator, His Son, and Great Spirit loves you and has your best interest in mind".
So, "God put a song in the throats of the birds, gave a murmur to running brooks, gave the wind a voice to whisper as it moved among the trees, and put a melody in the heart of mankind". These things, Running Wolf really believed with all his heart.
Running Wolf said, "That is why it is important that we let the sound of God's praise be heard.” He said, we should with joy, join in creation's song of praise, for without our sound of praise creation is not complete, and never be timid about it". John said, that is why the psalmist said, "O bless our God, you people, and make the voice of His praise to be heard " Let us give voice to the melody that He implanted within us, let it be heard from our hearts and our lips, in our singing and in our living, now and always.
It was late spring early summer when Rose Marie woke me out of a dead sleep, (John's wife) I always called her Momma, she had a pack filled with food and told me to go meet John at the barn after you eat the breakfast I have prepared for you. Momma is full blood Cherokee and I only heard her speak English a time or two in my life. Said she didn't care very much for the English language, it is too complicated, but she will speak Spanish. She said Spanish is one of the most beautiful language's on earth. Poppa speaks poquito.
When I got to the barn John told me to saddle a horse he had picked out and put the pack Momma packed for me on a mule named Kit, along with other possibles he already had loaded. Kit was a big mule and lived to be over twenty years. She loved John and followed him around like a puppy. When she died he grieved for months. She died in the harness while moving big rocks. Running Wolf always said, "When my time comes, I want to go meet Creator just like Kit did. I want to be in the harness working for and talking about Jesus."
I had no earthly idea what he had in mind, I figured we were going looking for stray cattle. WRONG! (I might mention, I was eleven yrs. old and spending the summer with him) John didn't talk very much unless you wanted to talk to him about the things of God, or telling Native American stories, and those stories always had a moral that pointed toward Creator. He said, "Walk tall but softly, keeping track of where you tread. Men that talk too much can't hear what others are saying." As a result of that most everyone that knew him listened when he spoke, so I just did what he told me and away we went.
We rode for a few hrs before he said we need to let these horses rest, so we stopped and shared some beef jerky and a cool drink of water. John fed the horses a hat full of oats and let them rest for a while and we started out again. I ask him where we were going because it became obvious we weren't looking for cows. His answer was soft and gentle. He said, "I am going to introduce you to someone." He then started singing Amazing Grace. If you never heard a Cherokee sing that song in their native tongue you have missed a lot. Finally, we arrived at the base of Sandia Crest, these days there are trails there, but fifty-five years ago it was mountain wilderness. It is 10.678 ft. above sea level. Keep in mind I was eleven yrs. of age and this is on the New Mexico high desert.
There is an old ranger shack there and we set up a camp and gathered firewood. Running Wolf wanted coffee, so I got water from the river, made the coffee and checked out the inside of the shack. In the mean time John caught a small mess of trout from the river, we fried them over the fire and ate some of momma's tortillas. It was late, we sat around the fire, John telling me about the love that Creator has for me and how important it is that I learn to hear the voice of Holy Spirit. That's when I figured out why we were there!
Wolf loved to read the bible and talk about the things it says. He never attended bible school but had an amazing comprehension of what the message is. And what it is conveying to man. He was a Holy Spirit gifted teacher. That first night on the mountain he said he wanted to talk to me about 'who I am and what I am'.. He told me that he knew my grandfather had led me to Jesus while we were fishing one day a couple of years ago, that he and grandfather had talked and decided it was time for me to get understanding, so that is why we are here, on the mountain. He began to read Psalms 8. Running Wolf had the softest sweetest voice of any man I ever knew. The only thing I can compare it to is, many years after this night on the mountain, I heard the voice of the Master, as I lay critical and dying on a hospital bed in Beaumont, Texas... John Read...
O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! Who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
What is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him? (What did you have in mind for man)
For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
This is what Abba has in mind for man!
He said man is made of of three parts, Spirit, soul and body. The spirit is that part of man that communicates and fellowships with God, the soul is where the mind, the emotions and will of man abides, whichever one is in control is what the body does.
John said, “When Satan interfered with man at the beginning, Satan brought man under his government. It was not that he came and set himself up as man’s ruler and subjected man by sheer force to his own government. He did it by breaking into that realm in man’s being where man was linked with God and that was in the realm of man’s spirit. “He that is joined to the Lord is one spirit”, and man was in fellowship and communion with God by means of his spirit, not his soul, not his body. These two were under the government of his spirit. Then the enemy, the Deceiver, came to man’s soul and instead of man reacting by his spirit-fellowship with God, he dropped down came out of his spirit, and reacted in his soul.
He said, the soul is reason, emotion, feeling, desire, choice, and will. And the enemy reasons through the desires and captures the will by deception. And you know what happened when man violated his union with God, his spirit... So the enemy governs man, and the whole of the race now through the nature of the soul-life. That is the basis of deception. It is just that! That is how you get a counterfeit Holy Ghost operating by reason of your psychical nature. You can become mediumistic in your very psychical nature and open all the avenues of your being to supernatural guidance and come under the power, the sway, dominion, of deceiving spirits operating in a multitude of ways. You can so suspend your spirit and come into a state of utter passivity that you are open to everything to play upon you. You can have your quiet hour in your soul, which is the most perilous hour of your life. That happens by suspending all spiritual activity and becoming utterly passive and opening your psyche being, which is a most dangerous thing. God never wants you to become spiritually passive. Waiting upon God is not being spiritually passive. God wants us active in spirit even when waiting on Him in silence.
Running Wolf called me Two Boy because I was the second born in a set of twins, this day he addressed me as 'My Son'. He said, “My son, I am jealous over you with Godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. And I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your mind should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that comes preaches another Jesus, whom I have not preached, or if you encounter another spirit, which you have not received, or another gospel, which you have not accepted, and though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel onto you than which I have preached unto you, let him be accursed. These things that I speak to you today, the Apostle Paul spoke over two thousand years ago to the church as false teachers and so called preachers descended on them. Paul was concerned about the gullibility of the church, because the people were very trusting in any message that was preached to them.” John told me the deceiver will not have a set of horns and a tail, he may be toting a bible and quoting scripture. Running Wolf said, “We must walk daily in the Holy Spirit to avoid the deceptions of the Devil.”
I woke to the music of happy songbirds praising God and rose to watch the fog moving around through the valley below. I lit a fire, put the coffee on, opened the doors and windows wide and took in all the fresh air and lovely fragrance that comes only on the mountain. The coffee began to perk, I thought about hiking higher
up toward the top of the mountain, carpeted with green, where the native plants were at their peak. It was summer heaven on the mountain, a blessing of creation, abundant, and full.
This is the song which Solomon sings, the goodness of creation, in this portion of the Song Of Solomon.
"For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land; the fig tree puts forth its fruit and the vines are in blossom, they put forth fragrance." This is a song of the goodness of nature. Someone has said, in fact, that it is the most beautiful song of nature in the Old Testament. It is a song that most of us have sung at times in our lives, when we are filled with the beauty of the world and the wonder of the pattern of nature. When the goodness of creation is reflected on an autumn afternoon, and the trees are dripping with color, as an artist's autumn palette all crimson and orange and gold, and the world itself seems an abundant place. Or when you rise on a winter morning and the new moon is hanging in the winter sky, two planets shine brightly beside the crescent as the sun edges its way up toward the horizon. It is cold and clear and breathtakingly beautiful.
The goodness of creation is reflected in the seasons, spring and summer, autumn and winter. There is a pattern to the created order and it is good. "For lo, the winter is past." But the Song is not simply a song to the goodness and beauty of creation, a simple song to spring arriving. No, the creation song is only background music to the main tune of the Song Of Solomon, which is this song of love, the song of two lovers: "the voice of my beloved, look, he comes leaping over the mountains, bounding over the hills," "my beloved is like a gazelle, or a young stag," "my lover is mine and I am his, who browses among the lilies," "catch us the foxes, the little foxes that damage the vineyards when the vineyards are in bloom." The Song Of Solomon is, in fact, a collection of poems, love poems, Take a moment to read the entire Song, but be prepared, for the Song Of Solomon is clearly a melody of love. The song says that such love should be sought after and treasured when found. These poems are an unapologetic depiction of two lovers and all that they share, their tenderness, intimacy, longing, illusion, mutual esteem of and desire for each other. The Song Of Solomon is a song sung to the mysterious and glorious dimensions of love.... Love of the Anointed One to His Bride. John Wolf truly believed he was a part of those that would become, The Bride of the Messiah.
The quiet time away from the chaos and stresses of this life will do you good. Poppa believes quiet time is essential to our Spirit life. I found a picture perfect spot sat down and just looked at the beautiful scenery. I sat there for several hours just looking out over the valleys. Thinking of the note and the bible Running Wolf left for me. John stayed with me three days, Breaking the Bread of Life. Beloved I think a lifetime of writing wouldn't be long enough to tell of the crumbs that fell from the table of John Running Wolf while with me on the mountain. The bible was opened to the Song of Solomon, for while I was sleeping he slipped away and left me on the mountain, alone. When I continued on my way, I found a small stream. A very large boulder was there, evidently time and weather had smoothed it because the top of it was rounded, looking much like a chair. I decided to sit there for a while. It was at that moment that I felt God was speaking to me. The best way to describe the experience is, it was as being held in the arms of God. Sitting on that old rock was like being in a cradle, in the very arms of God Himself. It was at that moment that I felt the overwhelming love of God. It was then that the Holy Spirit overwhelmed me and I was renewed and filled to capacity with the Great Spirit that John spoke of so many times in the days we were together. I prayed. "Ayv Adanedi Nihi Galvquodadi Galvquodiyu Adadoda, Nihi Uha Adanelv Ayv Danawohiliyvsqv Nasqinai Vdadilvquotanv Visvi, Equa Adanvdo Galutsv Adagatidisdi Hawiniditlv Ayv, Gani Ayv, Nigadvkaliwohi Ulisgolvtanv Ayv niqohilvi Advgi Nihi Kanegvuyoyvgv". "I give you praise Holy Father, You have given me answers for blessed journey, Great Spirit come abide within me, lead me and above all let me always hear your voice". "It was a prayerful atmosphere, a real haven of rest," the sights and sounds were God's gifts to me. I felt peace. I felt joy. And I felt my faith growing strong as I took in the majesty all around me." Parents never think your child, male or female, isn't ready to receive the things of Holy Spirit! The young man in the Song of Solomon was calling his beloved to go with him to the mountain tops where they could experience springtime in all its glories.
There's something about love that transforms people. Love between two persons, who count the number of days they have been together, is exhilarating to watch. A sure sign of being in love is day-dreaming of the other person, being consumed with thoughts of the cherished one, wanting to spend each waking moment with the other. Being in love changes a person. Knowing that you are loved is a transforming experience as well. Poppa be talking about a love above all loves, the love of the Master, and I can absolutely relate to the Apostle when he said, "That I may know Him". Oh dearly beloved, how sweet it is to be loved by Him and to be able to return your love with the praise that He so deserves. Amen!
I stayed on the mountain four days by myself, ate trout from the river, beef jerky and Momma's tortillas, when I ran out I started back down the mountain, and lo and behold as I neared the bottom there was Running Wolf. He had camped there and was waiting for me. The only words spoken between us were when John asked me if I had met the Holy One. My answer was short and simple, "Yes, I met the Holy One". He said, you don't have to be on the mountain for His fellowship, you may even be down in a valley at times, but you must be refreshed on a daily basis. Now we are going back to the world with all of its confusion, and you must take Great Spirit with you. He will walk with you on your journey. Although we spent most of my life together and he taught me many things, John never went back to the mountain with me. He said I must seek my own vision and walk the journey only I could walk. I have in Spirit, been back to the mountain many times in the last fifty five years, and me-thinks that is what has sustained me as I have walked this journey called life.
God Bless You Poppa
