Back when Christians were pious and reverent, they dressed carefully, bearing in mind who they were in Christ Jesus and what their mission in life was all about.
Today, one might find the most esteemed Christians dressed in a way that used to be totally unacceptable. You might find them so attired not just at the supermarket or the park, but even at church. There is, in fact, tremendous pressure put on church members, in the name of changing times and charitable attitudes, to accept this new way of dressing to go to church, to even teach the class, and to witness to the world about salvation and the Savior.
I deplore this new way of Christian dressing and am not at all convinced that I should accept it. I am assured and comforted in my stand against it when I remember that back when Christians manifest piety and a reverential fear of the Lord, they dressed to look nice, but they considered others and determined not to distract anyone from the service and they were very careful that their attire not be seductive.
They also knew that good character was a powerful witness tool and therefore they wanted their clothes to convey godliness, cleanliness, neatness, modesty, and humility.
The key words to this commentary are careful and considerate. Christians are to always be careful--that is full of care about others. And they are to always be considerate of others--that is always aiming to edify others and never to put a stumbling block in their way.
