Jn: 13:6-15: Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? 7: Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. 8: Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. 9: Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. 10: Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. 11: For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean. 12: So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13: Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 14: If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. 15: For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
Notice that Jesus said if He doesn’t wash us we have no part with Him. So this article is for and about all those whom Jesus has washed. This is the group we should fellowship with. We are not required to fellowship with someone just because they say they are Christians. There is no benefit in fellowshipping with unwashed people in fact it could be a foolish act.
Notice what Jesus said in verses 15 and 16. Those who are washed and have a part with Him ought to wash one another’s feet. How? Was He just talking about our physical feet? No. How could He have been when He said Peter was washed and only needed his feet washed. And physical washing does not make you a part of Him.
He was really talking about those in fellowship washing each other’s spiritual feet. Getting around out there in the world gets our feet dirty and we are to look out for one another and use the water of the Word to wash the traveler’s feet.
I found this important because it goes along with sharing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with one another, praying for one another, and urging one another on to love and good works.
Col: 3:16: Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Heb: 10:25: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
My point is that we are to do more than pray for one another. We are to speak the truth to one another in love as needed.
