The Door is Open, Come On In

Christian Author Writer The heat has settled in for the summer in Texas. I can't speak for the other old men in these parts, but Ol’ Poppa Kay has a tendency to lay low this time of year. I reckon age has something to do with it but I can still remember the first time I saw an air conditioner, or a television for that matter. I still chuckle when I think about my Grandfather saying, that stuff will never work. Of course, I also remember my Great Grandmother telling me about the first time she and the kids saw an automobile. They all ran and hid up under the house for fear that it was from outer space. That's the way it was in Scrub Creek, Texas in those days.

Well I am certainly not a writer and have a tendency to ramble a bit. If you don't believe me ask my children and grandchildren. But I wanted to write this letter to you and tell you about the week that I have had and how magnificent my Holy Father is. If you get bored you can put this letter down and come back to it another time, that's what my family does.

Back in ‘04 I had some pretty serious health issues come about. I went from two hundred and five pounds to eighty five pounds and the doctors said on two occasions that I wouldn't make it till morning. They tell me in medical terms that I flat lined twice. Now I don't want to lose you so I'll hurry on.

I only told you those things to lay a foundation for my story, see there, I'm rambling again!

Well, someday I'll write you another letter and tell you about when Jesus came to visit me in the hospital and told me he wasn't ready for me to come home yet. Anyway, while I was recovering and staying with family they nursed me back to health and finally got me strong enough to let me go out on the porch and sit while I drank my morning coffee. Most of the time, I was confined to my bed. It was winter time and one morning while on the porch and all bundled up I spotted a calico kitten out in the pasture catching bugs or lizards or anything else she could catch, just trying to survive. I tried to coax her to come to me with no luck at all. This went on for about three months. She was out there living under the barn. Well, we had a pretty good snow that year at Easter time and I was worried sick about her.

Spring time came and I was getting stronger although almost two years had passed since I got sick. Well out of the clear blue, one morning the little lady decided she was going to come visit me and lo and behold she came walking right up on the porch and started talking to me just like she had known me all her life. I don't know if its right or wrong and certainly won't split hairs about it, but I had spent days and months praying about that little lady. Before you Machos go off on me, I have had dogs all my life and am still crazy about them and the only thing I like as much as Jenny Lee, {that's what I named her} is riding bulls and writing poetry.

I managed to get in the house and bring a can of fancy feast cat food out to her and I guess it was her first time to dine on such high dollar vittles because she, with no apologies, devoured it in a matter of seconds and I thought, Master if you remember, that's the way it was the first time I sat at your table. I couldn't get enough of you, so much so, that the folks at the church finally went home and left me there. I was totally immersed in your Holy Spirit.

I made her a bed on the porch because she had not yet made the decision to let Poppa gather her into my arms and bring her to the safety of my fold. At first I was a little perturbed with her and then the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said, “Hear the words of the Savior, O Jerusalem. How often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not. I thought of the times that my Lord had called unto me and I would not.

Well, you may be wondering why I just happened to have a can of fancy feast in my possession, right now the Holy Ghost is all over me and if you will listen I will tell you. It is written, eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them that love him. I can tell you by my witness that the Father is just waiting to give you all the fancy feast you can handle. Hallelujah to his Holy Name.

Be patience with me, I’ve got to stop and shout a little while!!!!!

Okay I'm back! A couple of days went by and Jenny Lee each morning and evening would meet me on the porch and I knew that she had done the same thing I had done many years ago, she had tasted of the Lord and seen that he was good. One day with no warning at all she took the leap of faith and jumped in my lap and the love affair began. I was still not strong enough to hold her and open the door, so a member of my family opened the door and I brought her into my bedroom, I lay down on the bed and she crawled up next to me in my armpit and to this day that is the way we sleep.

Well I was not in my home, so I was told that I could keep her until they could find her another home. In the mean time I had them take her to the vet to make sure she was healthy and while she was there they decided to remove her front claws so that she would not destroy the furniture. Whether that's right or wrong that's the way it happened.

That's been over a year ago and I have been careful to take care of her and keep her in my sight. They told me once you remove the claws they have no way to protect themselves. Jenny and I are back in my own home now and living a life of pure bliss. She is a lover cat and I can't get enough of that wonderful stuff. That's the foundation, now the story.

And it came to pass, we have been here about eight months and she has always stuck to me like glue, never tried to be more than a few feet away from me, but one day this week, something called to her, and she ran away from home.

Just far enough that I could see her in the pasture, but every time I got close to her she would run into the woods or under the barn. Don't mind telling you I was frantic every time I would go back to the porch and sit down. She would sashay back into the pasture and just set and look at me. You see, I knew that without my protection she was defenseless and it grieved me to think of what could happen.

Isn't that the way for the children of God? As long as we abide under the shadow of His wing we enjoy his protection, but as soon as we step away, we are vulnerable to all of the fiery darts of the enemy.

Well, I couldn't sleep and I couldn't eat so I sat on the porch and waited. About nine that evening she came to the steps and started up to the porch and I rose up to greet her and she ran away again. Talking about being crushed, this old man was beside himself, but she did not return that night.

I sat all day the next day and as corny as it may sound Poppa prayed and ask the Father to bring her home to me and I could hear Jesus saying, ”Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, He will give it you. Ask and ye shall receive that your joy might be full.”

Late in the afternoon a dear sister in the Lord came by to check on me and I made coffee and I made an attempt to fellowship with her but I was still distraught and tried to hide it, but she could see through me.

And she said to me, “Jerry Lee you have made me see today how our Lord and blessed Savior must grieve when his beloved leaves the fold, even though it may be for a short time.” She gave me some words of wisdom. She said when it gets dark you leave the porch light on and leave the door open far enough that she can walk in. Don't do any thing, just put some food down in the same place you always do and go to bed. Well I did every thing she told me to do except for the going to bed. About 10 PM I was sitting in my easy chair in my bedroom reading my bible, the book of John, and I read, "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved."

Well I know I need to hurry along so I'll tell you I suddenly heard the sweetest meow in the whole world and there was my precious little Jenny Lee standing and watching me. She jumped up in my lap and started giving me sugar like nothing had ever happened. Well what did Ol’ Poppa K do? Did he begin to scold her and give her a spanking? No siree, I hugged her and kissed her, put a robe on her and killed the fatted calf and said thank you Master. If I ever do anything to make you grieve please send your Holy Spirit to remind me of how you will feel.

Dear one listen to me, THE "DOOR IS OPEN, COME ON IN" our blessed Lord opened it 2000 years ago and if you have left the safety of the fold, come on home. The porch light is on.
