Wars, whether major or minor, local or distant, create holes and gaps in lives for years for afterwards. Each individual must confront these as he or she sees fit. Some people descend into the depths of depression and struggle to achieve some sort of accommodation. Others, including Bruce Brodowski, seek for hope in the misery visited upon them through vicarious fate. This is a journey, a life that no one would ever seek, but occurs often in the lives of normal men.
Bruce Brodowski in this book has continued the journey begun in his previous book, “The Dad I Never Knew,” but this time he chooses to open up the details of his quest for peace and shares the experiences of others. It is this experience he calls the ‘orphan heart’ or ‘orphan spirit.’
To illustrate the orphan heart he uses the personal stories and experiences of other war orphans who grew up in the aftermath of the Second World War and orphans of more recent conflicts to show that his experience is not unique to his generation or cultural ethnicity. These are presented in the words of the orphan spirits themselves.
Even though this book is written with war orphans in mind, it is written in such a way as to make it applicable for anyone with an orphan heart through whatever circumstance. It is written in a style that lends itself quite handily to this purpose. The non-church going reader would also find comfort in the lines of this work. It does have quotes from the Bible as this is the grounding of the author’s faith, but they are offered in the honest spirit of comfort and encouragement. Faith, after all, should be a comfort and not a cudgel.
This book comes highly recommended for those seeking help to find answers and this reviewer knows of no one who isn’t.
