What is your house built on? No, not your literal “house,” but your house-house. You know, feelings of significance, self-worth…value. The stuff that makes you tick…
I’ll confess, I always try to build my “house” on shallow ground. You’d think I’d get wise, but noooooooo. Just a few short years ago my ego was scrambled with my bank account. My feelings of self-worth yo-yoed with the stock-market. Do you know what rough sailing that is? Pretty sad when Nordstrom holds your keys. Many are robbed of their peace that way.
Just yesterday, I experienced a moment of self-doubt. My husband pretended to listen as I whined about my predicament, but he couldn’t give me the kudos I craved. I could’ve called somebody else to pick me up …mom…my best friend Sandy. But, I’ve learned one thing in this life. There is really only one source: GOD.
“Why are you down?” GOD asked.
“Because I feel like I’ll never be good enough.”
“And, what does that have to do with anything?”
“Yeah. Like, I’ll die and never live up to these expectations?”
“Whose expectations?” God asked.
“Mine…”
”So, you’re going to feel good or bad about yourself based upon what you do and what you expect?”
“Well, yeah.” I answered. “Sort of.”
“What about the fact that you are mine? What about the fact that I love you? What about the cross? God asked. “Was that not enough for you?”
“Oh, Lord, what a bad memory I have! Of course you are enough. You are my source and my house is built on you. My house is built on you!” My insides smiled really big. “I can stretch out my roots and grow in your deep foundation of love.” Cool.
I gave him a big “Halleluiah.”
Talk about Eureka! This is the kind of stuff that sets people free—God’s stuff. If we would only get it through our minds that Jesus Christ loves us unconditionally, just the way we are…now we can quit striving for gain and just receive His acceptance and love.
You and me, we’re okay, not because of our accomplishments, our careers, our children, our husbands or our social status—no. We are okay because we were created by God for such a time as this. He gives us our worth and value, not external dumb stuff that is withering away like grass.
God’s foundation is unshakable.
Jesus said in Matthew 7:24 - 28
Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine,
and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who
built his house on the rock
and the rain descended, the floods came,
and the winds blew and beat on that house and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine,
and does not do them,
will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand;
and the rain descended, the floods came,
and the winds blew and beat on that house;
and it fell.
And great was its fall.
