Christian Author Writer “I know and rest in confidence upon it that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and will secure justice for the poor and needy. Surely the righteous shall give thanks to Your name; the upright shall dwell in Your presence.” – Psalm 140:12-13

Psalms ranks among my favorite Old Testament books. The Psalter is essentially an eclectic songbook – an anthology of lyrics written by a number of composers – most penned by King David himself. So, it’s no great stretch of the imagination to think that a musician/singer such as myself might be fondly drawn to David and to Psalms – the Bible’s only hymnal - featuring many of his compositions.

David was the eminently powerful, famously victorious yet ruthless king of Israel. As such, his enemies were many and far-flung. In this Psalm we find him singing his appeal to God for protection and rescue from the evildoers who surrounded him. At verse 9, David minces no words characterizing his foes as “venomous snakes and proudly wicked, violent men who set traps to ensnare, conspire and scheme against him.” Not only does David ask that the collusion of his hostiles be confounded, but he cries out to God - pleading for his antagonists to be wholly annihilated by their own devious devices. It’s not your basic Campfire Girls “Kum ba yah”, now is it?

Yet, even after eleven verses of pure storm and stress towards his rivals, David asserts his unflagging confidence in the justice and mercy of the Almighty unto all who believe! Israel’s most revered, God-fearing king joyously sings: “I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor” – Psalm 140:12 (KJV).

How many of us have the courageous faith to trust God completely, even in the face of bitter, hateful enemies? Moreover, in our text David challenges every believer when he declares that all sincerely righteous men and women shall thank and praise God for His bounteous blessings. Their reward will be to see His face and bask in the brilliant glow of His changeless holy presence. How awesome is that?

So this year, with the turkey eaten; the dressing devoured; the greens gone and the sweet potato pie subdued; now that the final football game is finished and Thanksgiving is truly over and done, will you continue to show an attitude of gratitude to our Lord? Will you Praise God for His goodness in your life? Will you sing just like David sang?

Will you be found giving thanks after Thanksgiving?
