“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” – Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)
Webster’s new world dictionary defines faith as follows: “unquestioning belief that does not require proof or evidence … complete trust, confidence or reliance … allegiance to some person or thing; loyalty.” Earlier in the chapter from which our text is taken, the apostle Paul writes, “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.” – Hebrews 11:1-2 (NIV)
So then spiritual faith is an unquestioning, unfailing, unwavering belief in God. It’s a belief held without proof or evidence, and it involves absolute allegiance, complete confidence, lifetime loyalty and timeless trust. Moreover, as Paul said, faith must be both certain and hopeful in God, even though we cannot see Him. Say what?!?! Belief in someone we cannot see? Trust and confidence in something we can’t prove? Hope and certainty about a being without any physical evidence of His existence? Scientists would call it illogical and preposterous, while psychiatrists might consider it the perfect definition of insanity! Folk today would say, “well, that’s just crazier than two left shoes” But make no mistake, cherished reader, in order to please God, you’ve gotta have “Crazy Faith”!
What do I mean by crazy faith? Crazy faith is when you simply refuse to let what you perceive – that is, your circumstances, your situations, your trials, tests and obstacles – interfere with what you believe. Crazy faith happens when the doctor diagnoses me with terminal cancer, but I believe that by His stripes I am healed (Isaiah 53:5). Crazy faith says that even when my mother and father forsake me, then the Lord will take me up (Psalm 27:10). Crazy faith says that I may have lost my job and can’t pay my bills, but the cattle on a thousand hills are the Lord’s (Psalm 50:10). You need faith which defies all logic, perception and circumstance. You need crazy faith!
Our text says that without faith it is impossible to please God. Why? Here are three reasons:
1) Faith is rooted in the Word of God. Did you notice how every example of crazy faith that I mentioned had a scripture associated with it? Do you think that was by accident? No way! Because our faith is dependent upon our understanding of the Word. Everything you need to know to obtain, stand on and exhibit crazy faith is clearly found in the Holy Bible. I encourage you to read the entire 11th chapter of Hebrews. And when you do, you’ll find example after example of men and women who had great faith; who had – you know it - crazy faith.
2) Seeking God diligently and earnestly demonstrates our love for Him. When we pray, meditate, fast, sing in the Spirit, praise, worship and study His Word, we show our love for God and for His commandments. Jesus said to the disciples, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” – Matthew 7:7. Notice, however, that the twelve had to take action first – ask, seek and knock. Likewise, faith is not a passive pursuit. Every person of faith in the bible took a step. But the key is they all sought God diligently and took action … and so must each of us, if we are to live by faith.
3) God takes pleasure in rewarding and blessing our acts of faith. The text says that He is a rewarder. The book of Luke says, “Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full – pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back” – Luke 6:38 (NLT). Jesus said, “… I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” – John 10:10b. You see, God is only testing us so that he can richly reward us. He wants to give us the prize. He wants us to win. “It is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom!” God is waiting at the finish line to give us the reward. Jesus Christ is leading the cheers for us. And the Holy Ghost is our track coach - running alongside us shouting encouragement every step of the way. He says, we walk by faith and not by sight! The just shall live by faith! Faith without works is dead being alone! Your faith has made you whole!
