So teach us to number our days, that we may get a heart of wisdom.
-- Psalm 90:12 RSV
The last few golden leaves tumbled to the ground, leaving bare branches like bony fingers pointing skyward. The biting wind stung as I walked through the driven rain, bundling my coat tighter. It wasn’t quite snowing, at least not yet. This was never my favorite time of year. In the past, I would count the months, and say to my friends, “It’s only six months until April.” A couple times I even planted potatoes in a huge flowerpot on my windowsill—in January—just to see something grow. I would live each week, longing for spring
That’s no longer true. Through illness in my family, I discovered that I can no longer take the future for granted. God gives us each day in its own season. Each day is valuable, each day is a gift from God. We can only live one day at a time. I don’t know how many more springs I’ll have. I only have today.
Lord, help us to number our days as Your Word says, living one day at a time, remembering each day is a gift from You. Help us to be content, joyfully living each season of our lives. Amen.
