Don't you just love the flowers, ribbons, bells and bows of a classic wedding ceremony? Love so thick, you can slice the air. The bride--the focal point--glorious damask and silk; dreams coming true. Lavish details, no expense spared. Amaretto cake melting in your mouth; fragrant rose and hyacinth. Sparkling diamond ring--symbol of everlasting love. Alas the two lovebirds' devotion unto death is sealed with a ravishing kiss.
"Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth,
for your love is better than wine." (Song 1:2-3)
Let's remember that the creator of love, the Son of God, Jesus Christ taught that our relationship to him is like a bridegroom to his bride. This is no small matter! Our stance should be that of a bride in waiting; Christ stands as our valiant groom. The the Holy Spirit is our ring, the seal of our betrothal. We are seated in heavenly places with Christ. If only we all knew the intimacy Jesus wants to bestow.
The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken
from them; then they will fast." Matthew 9:15.
Emily Post wrote in 1922 of the varying levels of ceremony.
From the elaborate wedding with a "veritable garden in every room," to a small wedding of "sandwiches, cakes and tea."
All man made ceremony will pale by comparison to the grandeur of the Wedding Supper of the Lamb prepared for the church, those of us who are saved.
"as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride,
so will your God rejoice over you." Isaiah 62:5
The entire Bible tolls the wedding bells of Christ's return. And, of greater weight than ceremony, is the emotional climate of our expectation. We must draw close to our Bridegroom corporately and individually. Our feelings should surpass that of any bride in waiting, butterflies and all.
"My beloved is mine and I am his." Song 3:16
During the engagement, a Groom woos his Bride with gifts, kisses, secrets, and songs. All the while the Bride's heart aches with longing as she clothes herself with Wisdom, Honor and Purity. The flames of romance are kindled with treasured memories, amorous attractions and intimate encounters. The whirlwind of relationship, what a mystery! How passionate are the fires of adoration as two become one.
Turn your eyes from me,
for they have overcome me. Song 6:5
We must not lose heart, for in a matter of time, those who are prepared will join Christ for the wedding feast. This is one fairy tale ending that is no myth, Christ reigns victorious! All creation yearns for an invitation.
How delightful is your love, my sister,
my bride! Song 4:10
Beloved, it is my prayer that the Lord to reveal His heart to you, His Beautiful Bride, that you may know and understand what is the "width and length and depth and height--"of His love for you. "That you may know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge; that you may be filled with the fullness of God." (Ephesians 3:18-19) The Bridal March is playing--will you come down the isle?
Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
Rev. 19:7
