In Search of Jacob

Christian Author Writer In the book of Genesis, Chapter 29, we are told of the story of Jacob and his love for Rachel. God intended for love and marriage to be perfect, and has strict rules for us to follow regarding the sanctity of a marital relationship. This also includes the manner in which we should conduct ourselves in the premarital stages of a relationship. It also gives us an example of the man that we as women should seek for a husband, the type of love God intended for a man to have for his wife, and the respect that should be shown prior to the marriage.

Jacob is a true man of character in the Bible who demonstrates for us real love, and what we as women should strive to find in a man. According to the scriptures, “Jacob was in love with Rachel and said, I’ll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel” (Genesis 29:18)

From this scripture we can learn a couple of things. First, we learn that it is possible to find a man that will wait and work for us. We should judge our potential mate not on his appearance or by his material wealth or status in life, but by his love for God and then for us. Jacob so loved Rachel that he was willing to work in servitude for her father for seven years, just to have her heart. The Bible also speaks again to the amount of love that Jacob had to her in Genesis 29:20, “So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel but they seemed only a few days to him because of his love for her.” In our search for love, we should know that we are worth waiting for, and should not settle for less than that man who is willing to wait and work for our love.

Second, as the Chapter continues, we see that Rachel remained pure during those seven years. This is evidenced by Jacob requesting to lay with his wife in verse. In today’s society, the pressure is on young women to lose their purity at a very early age. When a young woman succumbs to these pressures, what is left is a man who has nothing to wait for and, therefore his has nothing to work for.

In order for him to wait for seven years, we know that Jacob had the AGAPE love that God wants us to have for one another, the love without conditions. In today’s society, we don’t even give the man a chance to know whether it is another kind of love, lust or AGAPE love. God knew that marriages would need that true AGAPE love to survive. Throughout his word he has given us examples to apply to our lives and live by. It is evident in these days to see we don’t give ourselves time enough to know what we are truly feeling before we give in to our sinful desires which are also good at clouding our emotions, and making us think that we feel something that we don’t.

Ladies, let’s wait on the AGAPE love that Jacob had for Rachel, and keep ourselves pure and worthy enough for waiting.
