“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” Prov. 16:18 Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
Have you ever felt like that? Have you sat on a wall of pride or self absorption and fallen off and life as you knew it shattered? So many times we think we have it all together, and end up finding ourselves flat on our faces without so much as a shred of pride or dignity left. God, in His infinite mercy, rescues us and restores us, something all the King’s horses and all the Kings men could not do for poor Humpty Dumpty.
In those times that we are flat on our faces we need to remember the basic facts of our faith. God loves us, He has a plan for us, and that these events can be used to conform us to the image of Christ. We learn that it’s not about us. It’s all about the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
Imagine that God, the Creator of the Universe, cares about us. Even when we’ve fallen off the wall and hit bottom. Even when we feel so shattered that we don’t think we can ever get it together again. In those moments, God reaches down with His great love, picks us up, dusts us off, and sets us back on the path, this time, going His direction. Poor Humpty was depending on people and horses. The Bible says “some trust in horses and some in chariots, but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” (Prov. 20:7) As Christians, we need to trust in the name of the Lord our God. Our God! What a wonderful reminder that He really is our God.
Nothing could put Humpty back together again, but as for us, our God binds up our broken hearts and heals our wounds. It’s such a blessing that we don’t live in a fairytale world, but the real world where the King of Kings can put us together again.
